Climbing Via Kamweti Route On Mount Kenya: The Ultimate Guide

Approaching Mount Kenya peak from the South is Kamweti Route. Kamweti trekking route is the least-visited of the mountain’s established climbing trails, beginning at Kamweti Gate on the southern slopes in Kirinyaga. This long, forested Mount Kenya climbing route threads through undisturbed montane forest, one of the most pristine on the mountain’s southern aspect — before ascending to the Afroalpine moorland and connecting with the summit circuit. Kamweti trekking trail requires special entry permit, full camping equipment, and a highly experienced local guide. This route is not suitable for first-time trekkers visiting Mount Kenya.

Conquering the Kamweti Route is fairly challenging, largely because it is on the windward side of the mountain that is often marked by a rough underfoot, dense forests, mud after rains, no huts and a forest trail used more by animals than humans.

Additionally, the mountain forest here is historically significant — this was one of the primary approaches used by early colonial-era climbers and scientists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, before the Sirimon and Naro Moru routes were established.

Kamweti Route Climbing Itinerary

Attempting the summit via Timau Route can be done in 8-9 days hiking.

The Kamweti Route is approached from the south by first driving up from the village of Kimunye to Castle Forest Station. The hike up Mount Kenya via Kamweti Route commences at Castle Forest Lodge, 22 km from the town of Kerugoya. You may either start your journey from the lodge or drive another 6 kilometers up to the Kamweti Forest Station, which is located at roughly 2600 meters. From here, it’s as much about building a trail as it is about following one for around 6 kilometers through bamboo and huge heather until emerging onto a ridge and continuing on to the head of the Kiringa river, which comes out of a great basin in the hillside.

The heath thins out for the following 10 kilometers or so as the route approaches The Scoop, which is located at the end of a long ridge that leads to the summits. From here, you may either continue the ridge to Austrian Hut via Tilman Peak or walk west around Lake Hohnel to MacKinders Hut.

At Mackinder’s Camp, the Kamweti Routes meets up all other routes for the final climb to conquer Point Lenana. Having arrived at Mackinder’s, where several of the circuits branch off from, you might be in luck to join other parties heading to Point Lenana. Kamweti Route is by far, the longest trail up to Point Lenana – though it has some pleasing waterfalls along the way, most notably of Kamweti Falls.

The recommended trekking combination is a Kamweti ascent with Chogoria descent — a full south-to-east traverse that covers two completely different aspects of the mountain in 7–9 days of climbing Mount Kenya. There are no established hut facilities on the southern approach, therefore we will be fully camping throughout the climb.
