What Makes A Great Mount Kenya Trekking Guide?

A great mountain guide combines route knowledge, altitude judgment, medical awareness, climber pacing, clear communication and calm leadership. Your mountain guide should know when to continue, when to slow down and when a safe descent is the right decision.

Managing Altitude

A great Mount Kenya climb guide monitors how you are adapting to altitude, including symptoms, hydration, sleep, appetite, pulse and oxygen saturation.

Setting The Right Trekking Pace

The climb is purposefully slow. Consistent pacing conserves energy and gives your body time to acclimatise over several days.

Leading Summit Nights

Summit night starts around midnight on many hiking routes. Your guide should easily manage layers, planned breaks, hydration, morale and the long descent after Lenana Peak or Batian Peak.

Make Safety Decisions/ Safety Calls

Experienced guides do not chase a summit success statistic at the expense of your health. Worsening altitude symptoms require immediate assessment and, when needed, descent.

Meet Our Guides, Chefs And Safari Team On Mount Kenya

Meet our expert guides – the people who turn a demanding high-altitude climb into a carefully managed, hiking experience. We read the mountain, monitor your health and make the safety decisions that matter from the first briefing to Batian – Lenana Peaks and back down.

Do I Need A Guide To Climb Mount Kenya?

Yes. All Mount Kenya treks must be accompanied by a licensed guide. Your guide manages route decisions, camp registration, pacing, health checks and emergency procedures.

What Happens If I Become Sick On The Mountain?

Your guide assesses your symptoms and vital signs, stops or slows the ascent when necessary, and organises descent when symptoms are severe or worsening. Emergency oxygen, a medical kit and established rescue procedures are carried on our climbs.

Why Are Mount Kenya Guides and Porters Important?

You might be asking yourself, do I need a guide to climb Mount Kenya?

The importance of your Mount Kenya climbing crew cannot be ignored or underestimated: the guides and porters make the difference between a great experience on Mount Kenya and an absolutely disastrous one. All our guided Mount Kenya climbs are supported by a crew of local people who are experts on the mountain.

Each Climbing Mount Kenya guide has his own team of assistant guides and camp staff who work together on every Guided climb. This teamwork gives a team dynamic that translates into an unparalleled level of service on the mountain. On all Guided Mount Kenya treks, we keep a ratio of three clients to one guide so every climber receives personal attention and encouragement. Without our guides, a Mount Kenya hiking tour is not the same.

Our Mount Kenya climbing guides have received first aid training from National Park authorities prior to their certification and get additional training from us and other well-wishers on a regular basis. They can easily recognize the symptoms of serious altitude sickness and organize an immediate descent which is by far the best treatment. We follow established protocol for handling emergencies on the mountain, including rescue and evacuation procedures.

Usually, for a trek for two people over 6 days a normal crew would comprise 1 x lead guide, 1 x assistant guide, 1 x cook and 3 to 4 porters. We will inform you of the size of your crew before you depart for your climb.
